Carlsbad speaker offers do's and don'ts of mid-life dating
by Joanna Smiley

Even if you've been divorced not once but twice, even if you've lost almost every ounce of faith in men and worst of all, in your own 'adorability'--don't give up yet.

That's the message that Claudia Jean, national speaker and author of the book, "Aging with a Vengeance," will be delivering to a group of local soul-searching, middle-aged women Tuesday evening in Carlsbad.

It took Jean two failed marriages and a long, honest look in the mirror to give her the dose of "raging self confidence" she needed to find inner happiness and to finally meet the right man. She's been married to a man she says she's "100 percent sure is her soul mate" now for 14 years. He started off as one of her "adorable buddies," and by the third date she looked at him and knew, right then and there, she "was done."

For the past 10 years, Jean has been committed to helping women who say, "All the good men are gone," or "Men only want younger women," realize that these are myths and they too can find "the one."

Jean says she has "a great passion for helping people live a happy life."

"I was running into so many women who were down on men. ... Women zero-in on wanting to find their soul mate. I want to open them up to the universe so they can see the lovability in a man as a person. ... they need to first see a man as a friend, just like they would a woman. ... sharing laughter is also key," Jean said.

She also encourages women to realize that only by adoring themselves can they adore a man.

"Life is pretty easy when you take that approach," Jean said.

She plans to have another workshop soon for single men.

In the meantime, the Carlsbad speaker says that if she "can help women even at the age of 25 learn what they're doing wrong with men, that's a beautiful thing. ... The right guy is out there. Everybody else is a great experience along the way."

Dating tips from Claudia Jean

Know your own adorability, first and foremost.

Be patient. The right man is out there and everything else is part of the expeience along the way.

Don't waste time loving men who don't love you. Open up your eyes and heart to seeing the men out
there that actually want to be with you.

Remember, men ar scared too. They have their own sets of issues.

See men as friends and as people before you think about them as your potential "soul mate."

Body image focus of motivational speech
by Pat Sherman

RANCHO PENASQUITOS-- For decades, women have been advised that the goal is to "age gracefully."

Style coach and motivational speaker Claudia Jean prefers a less passive approach.

The author of "Aging with a Vengeance," will speak at the next meeting of the Diamond Gateway Women's Organization.

The group, a social and charitable organization for women in the Rancho Penasquitos area, meets the second Tuesday of each month, September through June, at the Double Tree Golf Resort in Rancho Penasquitos.

For Jean, self-acceptance is a lifelong process. She works with women of all ages, she said, to help them to shake off myths about body image.

Whenever possible, she likes to work with groups of mothers and daughters, to help younger women develop a sense of self-worth independent of body image. Jean said.

"At around 12 to 14, girls just start crumbing in on themselves," Jean said.

A flawed self-perception developed in adolescence can follow a woman throughout her life, she said.

"If a 30-year-old had an issue at 15, she'll have the same issue at 80," Jean said. "Very few women really feel good about their bodies, and it doesn't get any better with age."

Though 56, Jean said she feels much younger on the inside.

"The aging process is very confusing, because it's not our truth. Our truth is this younger, vital, can-do individual on the inside."

"I'm 18 on a really mature day," she said. "I'm not looking at what I can't do; it's always what I can do. It's all this potential that's in front of me."

Style has nothing to do with age, she said.

"I am about self-estem from the inside out. It always comes back to the core of who you are. The gifts you are given should be enough."

The Diamond Gateway Women's Organization is hoping to attract new members through its monthly presentations. Dues are $20 per year. "We're trying to encourage all the women in the area to come join," vice president Judy Bauer said."

Booming Generation: Baby boomers are determined they are going to live life to the fullest until they die
by Tricia Jones, staff writer

...As much as she'd still like to accomplish, entrepreneur Dutro might welcome another couple of centuries. A Portland native who lived in Vancouver from the age of 4 into her early 50s, Dutro wrote her book as simply Claudia Jean, the name of her women's clothing and accessories collection.

She says for "Aging with a Vengeance," she took the concept of getting older and applied a business model to the process.

"It takes strategic planning--a mission and mentors," Dutro said. "What we most often fail to do, and what we most need to do, is plan to grow old. What does it look like ...and whom do I want to emulate over the years?"

Before boomers indulge in a round of mass back-patting, Dutro said they need to realize what they owe to thier parents' generation. Given that the oldest boomer has yet to hit 60, Dutro credits boomer parents with leading the way on keeping the senior years vital.

"We're not defined as old, because even 'old' isn't old anymore," Dutro said. "There are seniors out there who are beating the socks off us, and that's who we ask to mentor us. We win by bringing them in as friends."

By emulating their seniors, Dutro says, savvy boomers can join her in looking forward to 90 as a vital age.

"(Any age) can be a powerful place if we claim it as a groovy place to be. Being conscious, being on board and looking forward to a fun, exciting journey--that's what I'm planning for," she said.
